Taste of Iceland 2018: The Food, The Culture, The Music, October 11-14 http://vanguardseattle.com/2018/10/11/taste-of-iceland-2018-the-food-the-culture-the-music-october-11-14/ Thu, 11 Oct 2018 20:22:54 +0000 http://vanguardseattle.com/?p=77896 The 11th annual Taste of Iceland festival has begun, and it is the most ambitious one yet. And why not? Iceland just celebrated its 100th birthday on June 17th, and thats worthy of some extra celebration. Here is a rundown of some of the events and dinners happening this year. See a full list on the website. The Food: October 11-14 I don’t usually go out of my way to remark on food, as there are plenty of others devoted to the subject. Hoowever, after trying this year’s menu from Icelandic chef Hákon Már Örvarsson and chef Ron Anderson of Cuoco, I can’t resist. If you love surf and turf selections, this four course masterpiece a must. The opening two courses feature Arctic char, salted cod and langoustine, all prepared beautifully. The third course is Icelandic lamb and…honestly, it was cooked to such melt-in-your-mouth perfection, I’m not sure if I’ve ever had it so good. The subtle addition of a dust of herbs and dried blueberries gave it a surprising, satisfying finish. If you want craft cocktails to match, mixologists Teitur Ridderman Schiöth (Iceland) and Nikki Koth (Cuoco) have concocted four unique recipes for the occasion. They all use either... Read more »

The Independent Designer Runway Show: Top Looks and The Big Winner http://vanguardseattle.com/2018/10/03/independent-designer-runway-show-top-looks-big-winner/ Wed, 03 Oct 2018 20:52:22 +0000 http://vanguardseattle.com/?p=77839 In past years, The Bellevue Collection Independent Designer Runway Show (IDRS) has often been the debut for up-and-coming designers in a major public venue. They spend months being mentored on how to create a cohesive line that can be both a creative and commercial success. This process took them from the idea stage to a fully-realized collection. This year, Fashion Week At The Bellevue Collection took a fresh approach to IDRS. All of the competing designers have established their labels, but are ready for the next steps as artists and business owners. Quite a few were veterans of the IDRS competition. They included IDRS 2017 winner, Poppyseed. The competition’s grand prize was $2,000 and featured editorial coverage in Seattle Met Magazine, courtesy of the Kemper Freeman Family and The Bellevue Collection. In past years, the winner of the Fan Favorite poll was different than the grand prize winner, but this year it was unanimous. Cute Like Mad was named the fan favorite and winner of the IDRS 2018. The IDRS featured designers for 2018: Devonation by Devon Yan Lourdes é Eva by Nora Suárez Cute Like Mad by Jeanette Svensk Li Poppyseed by Rebekah Adams Valentina & Valentia by Milena... Runway Recap: The Art of Fashion at Bravern Fashion Week http://vanguardseattle.com/2018/09/18/runway-recap-art-fashion-bravern-fashion-week/ Tue, 18 Sep 2018 19:11:39 +0000 http://vanguardseattle.com/?p=77803 On Saturday, September 15, Neiman Marcus Bellevue hosted the Art of Fashion Presentation as a highlight of the first annual Fashion Week at The Bravern. The runway show featured fall and winter styles for men and women from brands including Gucci, Calvin Klein, Valentino, Libertine and Dolce & Gabbana. The packed house sipped bubbles and bourbon and watched a runway show abundant with vibrant color, animal prints, mixed patterns and retro/modern silhouettes. rich blues, greens and wine colors, plaids and major impact prints. Textures of velvet, sequins for any time of the day and lots of leather were everywhere. Peacock-colors gave depth to the pieces, and details included sequined evil eyes and floral embroidery. There was such elegance in the layering of hues of the same color, like a deep green leather jacket under a softer, sage-colored, long puffer. Layering also applied with animal prints on animal prints and florals with patterns. Dramatic luxury puffer coats ruled the runway, as did the “Dad” sneaker with those major elevated soles. Western boots, strong shoulders and belt bags slung across the chest gave a nod to the 90s with a modern update. Handbags came in beautiful jewel tones in unique shapes, plus major... Read more »
