Capitol Hill Art Walk: August 2018 ftg. Imminent Mode

August 9, 2018 @ 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm

The monthly Capitol Hill Art Walk should be extra lively for August. In addition to the usual openings at galleries and shops, we're seeing a few special one-night-only events, too. The fourth iteration of Imminent Mode at Vermillion opens with a street fashion show on 11th Ave, between Pike and Pine. Imminent Mode pairs visual artists with creatives working in fashion and clothing design. This year's nine pairings include Devon Yan (DEVONATION, winner of IDRS 2016) with Juan Monroy, Jordan Christianson (Jonquil & Mr. Black) with Anouk Rawkson, and milliner Brenda Bryan (Lovewell Couture) with Grant Rehnberg. The theme this year is Lore: telling stories through the garments one wears. studio e gallery will be hosting its monthly pop-up exhibition in the mezzanine of Amandine Bakery. This month features an installation of works by Amber Barney-Nivón, curated by Anthony White. Among the great gallery shows opening, I'm particularly excited for Underbrush by Sam Wolfe Connelly at Creatura House. From the event page: Creatura House is very pleased to present a show of works by NY artist Sam Wolfe Connelly. For this show, Connelly traded his usual enigmatic and Lynchian horror themes to create a show about the wildlife he encountered as…

Georgetown Art Attack: August 2018 ftg. The Bacon Strip Trailer Park Show

August 11, 2018 @ 6:00 am - 9:00 pm
George Town Art Attack

August is one of the best months to check out Georgetown Art Attack. The weather is right for a night out in the industrial, bohemian neighborhood, and there are some extra special tricks each year. The much beloved monthly drag and burlesque cabaret Bacon Strip takes its show outdoors into full view at the Georgetown Trailer Park. The show starts at 9, after the art walk festivities, so don't tire yourself out in advance. Everything is free, but bring singles to tip the performers at Bacon Strip. Our favorite art shows this month At Fantagraphics, see a temporary mural "Homage to Max Ernst" by Seattle's weirdo comic king Jim Woodring and Berlin artist Lilli Loge. Outside Oxbow, check out Dylan Neuwirth's gorgeous new installation, a towering "hatejammer" lit by the five Noble Gases. The quiet, meditative group exhibition The Veil curated by Sequoia Day O'Connell continues at Bridge Productions featuring works from four artists, including a large hanging sculpture by Ko Kirk Yamahira. (You'll want to see it if you didn't see it during his recent solo show at The Frye Art Museum...and you may want to touch it as well, but resist the urge). studio e is one of several locations…

The first picture is executed with my eyes and I print it in my brain, then I shoot with my camera and that's where it starts. She and I are one. Starting in this way to make you further understand the questions I ask the world and how it, in turn responds loaded with colors, forms and personal secrets, often enigmatic as my own self. My brain then makes my finger press the shutter automatically. I use my skills to make the objects fall in step with me and show me what they know and what they hold back. With my work I try to break the laws of physics themselves and I fuse with the lights that I find in the night, transforming the matter that they illuminate into lines and…

February 2019

Georgetown Art Attack, February 2019

February 10, 2019 @ 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm

The second Saturday of February is February 9. It's time for Georgetown Art Attack, and it may be a sleepy month, but there are shows worth seeing. You can get a more complete list on the official website, but here are some highlights for the month. If you have not yet caught Green Fuse, paintings by Sarah Norsworthy at studio e, Art Attack is the closing reception. Norsworthy's thickly layered, painterly pictures of Pacific Northwest greenery have a truly vegetal feel. The recently opened Fogue Gallery features a solo exhibit of wood-worked sculpture by Tom Gormally. What seems whimsical at first glance in these works is actually parabolic. In the words of the gallery, they are effigies meant to"dispel the negative influence affecting our culture." What could that be? Maybe the title of the show, Fox in the Hen House, provides a clue. As always, you can hop between venues via the free Art Attack shuttle, courtesy of Sam Farrazaino and Equinox Studios. And as always, Equinox Studios itself will have its open house, and who knows what bohemian hijinks will be happening there? See for yourself.
