Pacific Place Presents Fashion Meets Film: Downton Abbey The Movie

September 21, 2019 @ 10:00 am - 1:30 pm

$20.00

Since we bid farewell to the Crowley family at Downton Abbey in December 2015, there has been constant buzz about the possibility of a “Downton” movie in the works. Now Downton Abbey fans can now rejoice; on September 20, 2019, “Downton Abbey: The Movie”, will be released.

To celebrate the release of this film, Pacific Place will host “Fashion Meets Film: Downton Abbey”, on Saturday, September 21, 2019 from 10 am to 1:30 pm. The event kicks off with mimosas and breakfast bites at a stylish reception, followed by a fall fashion trend presentation by Darcy Camden, Styled Seattle wardrobe stylist, and Andrew Hoge, Seattle Magazine style and society writer, and then the showing of the film.

The film itself picks up in 1927, some two years after the time when the series ended. The plot centers around a royal visit to Downton by the King and Queen, and how this event affects all the characters, both upstairs and downstairs, as well as the nearby village. The film’s story line was inspired by an actual royal visit in 1912 that King George V and Queen Mary made to Wentworth Woodhouse, a country house in Yorkshire. As for the movie, all of the characters from the original series will appear in the movie, including the sharp witted Maggie Smith as Violet, the Dowager Countess of Grantham, Michelle Dockery as Lady Mary, and Jim Carter, the beloved Carter Carson, the butler of Downton Abbey.

This film is a perfect fit for this “Fashion Meets Film” series because much like today, trends of the time change with each year and season. As with the series, the movie showcases the fashions of the era, in this case 1927, to help tell the story. Through dress, the characters show their place in society, the rapidly changing times, and individual personalities. Anna Robbins, the costume designer for both the series and the film, created about 60% of the costumes from scratch, and sourced vintage pieces for the rest.

Incidentally, the movie is just one of the ways you can feast your eyes on the incredible period fashion, many of it vintage pieces, worn throughout the Downton Abbey series six seasons. “Downton Abbey: The Exhibition” has opened in Boston at The Castle at Park Plaza for a limited engagement. The exhibition, based on the series, showcased sets and costumes from the show.

Ticket prices for the event are $20 and all proceeds from this event benefit Mary’s Place, which provides safe, inclusive shelter and services for women, children & families on their journey out of homelessness.
