Back in 2016, English National Ballet commissioned and premiered Broken Wings by choreographer Annabelle Lopez Ochoa. The two-act ballet is a visually sumptuous homage to the artist’s works and tumultuous life. Lopez Ochoa is one of those choreographers we love to follow, but we hadn’t yet seen this work in full. But yesterday, ENB made it available online for 48 hours, so don’t miss it.

As part of the ENB at Home streaming series, the company will be releasing a production a week for ‘Wednesday Watch Parties.’ Each week, they will broadcast a dance performance broadcast on ENB’s Facebook and YouTube channels for 48 hours. We love that they launched with this gorgeous production of Broken Wings, starring lead principal (and ENB artistic director) Tamara Rojo as Frida Kahlo. Irek Mukhamedov plays the role of Kahlo’s husband and fellow artist, Diego Rivera.

After suffering multiple fractures on her spine, collarbone and ribs along with a shattered pelvis, Kahlo suffered life-long pain. It was during her initial recovery that she began to focus on her painting, and Lopez Ochoa drew on this period to bring Kahlo’s artwork to life. Eleven male Fridas perform these tableaux vivants in flowing skirts, surreal adornments, and vivid body paint.
