The Harmonious Society of Tickle-Fiddle Gentleman at Folio, January 10

Folio: The Seattle Athenaeum will open the new year with The Harmonious Society of Tickle-Fiddle Gentleman sound | counterpoint, this Tuesday, January 10 at 7pm. From Folio: The Seattle Athenaeum continues its season of music by presenting sound|counterpoint in collaboration with Early Music Guild. The sound|counterpoint ensemble specializes in music of the late Renaissance, the Baroque, and 21st century played on period instruments. The group members—Miyo Aoki, recorder; Curtis Foster, oboe; Linda Melsted, violin; and Jonathan Oddie, harpsichord—will be joined by Christine Wilkinson-Beckman (violin/viola) to present a choice sampling of pieces from libraries of Thomas Britton and Gottfried Finger, featuring music by Locke, Purcell, Matteis, and others. The program harks back to 17th century London where, in addition to the thriving publishing market which provided music to amateurs to enjoy in their own homes, the popularity of the public concert was also on the rise. Early London concertgoers embraced a diverse selection of musical styles: from older English fantasias to newer sonatas from the European continent. In the library of one musical enthusiast, works in the most up-to-date Italian and French styles sat alongside English compositions by composers from the turn of the 17th century, fifty or sixty years earlier.
