The Yves Saint Laurent Selects film series continues this Wednesday, November 9 at SAM (Seattle Art Museum). See director Jean Cocteau’s romantic classic La Belle et la Bete (Beauty and the Beast) at 7:30pm in Plestcheeff Auditorium.
The 1946 French-language film will be shown with English subtitles on 35mm. The film stars Jean Marais as the reclusive, opulent beast (formerly known as a prince) and Josette Day as Belle. The film is worth seeing for the beast’s sophisticated makeup alone. When the spell is broken and we see the actor Marais in his human form, Greta Garbo famously remarked, “Give me back my beast!”
On November 30, the series will conclude with Luis Bunuel’s classic, Belle de Jour. Visit SAM for details. Finally, be sure to check out our previous coverage on Yves Saint Laurent to learn more.
