October is a month of high spirits, from football to Halloween parties, and all the fall festivities in between. The trees are putting on their own fall wardrobe in beautiful hues of deep red, burnished copper, gold and deep green. Every day, the mornings feels a little crisper and the views are a little more spectacular. October fashion is not just about layers. It is the perfect time to show some spirited style of your own.

Get ready for a change of costume and a cocktail.

WHO YOU GONNA CALL?

Black is most definitely a chic go-to color for the cooler months, beginning in October when it also nods to All Hallows Eve. The black pieces in this look are anything but basic, showing the new silhouettes of exaggerated sleeves and ruffles everywhere. This stand out Roksanda Truffaut bell sleeve top has the coolest sleeves; they go from fitted to flared in a trumpet shape. It is the perfect partner to Zara’s Flared Flowing Trousers.

Choker necklaces are very hot right now and range from thin ribbon pieces to thick embellished ones. Wear this Fallon Monarch Black Leather and Pearl Choker to go with your look’s of-the-moment flare pants. Gucci is also hot at the moment. These gorgeous Gucci Ghost loafers go perfectly with our spirited attire.

What exactly is the Gucci Ghost story? Former Olympic snowboarder and Gucci-enthusiast Trevor Andrew needed a last minute costume for Halloween. His solution was to cut two holes in a Gucci sheet and go as a “Gucci Ghost.” His capering about in costume on Instagram won him a huge following and caught the attention of Gucci Creative Director Alessandro Michele. The popularity of his online persona cheekily idolizing the brand developed into a collaboration, and Gucci Ghost came to life.

To bring your look to life with major personality, the handbag is the magic touch. The shaggy faux fur Vasic Collection Sevny Tote is perfect to stash ghostly goodies. If you want to show a little kitschy style, carry Kate Spade’s black cat handbag. It is perfect because, yes, cats are also IN fashion right now, with or without Halloween.

The Cocktail: Liquefied Ghost Martini

The perfect spirituous beverage to complement this look is The Liquefied Ghost Martini, courtesy of Cooking With Curls.

SPOOKY FUN

Check out designs by Simone Rocha at SPACE, Nordtsrom’s in-store boutique of emerging and advanced designers, curated by Olivia Kim. Rocha was the 2013 Emerging Designer British Fashion Award winner and has strong, feminine pieces with a fresh perspective. Her “Spooky” Floral Embroidered Dress takes the embroidery trend to the next level. And who can resist a woman in red? Glamorous Gold Dolce & Gabbana Floral Stud Pumps are in keeping with the floral details of the dress and can make the ensemble truly otherwoldly.

Carry the look to your fingertips with blood red Chanel lacquer on your nails and a LumillaMingus LAIA clutch in white perforated leather. One of the designers showcased at the recent opening of RIZOM in Belltown, Seattle was FARIS Jewelry. The architectural pieces have smooth curves and captivating designs. The bronze FARIS Float Ring sits above your finger in a display of artistic magic. The simplicity of the statement ring shines against the ornate details of the dress.

The Cocktail: Blood and Sand

An inspired cocktail should most certainly be Blood and Sand. Is is named for the 1922 silent film starring heartthrob Rudolph Valentino as an ill-fated matador. Bourbon lovers will be charmed by Blood and Sand’s robust charms.

SKELETONS IN YOUR CLOSET

No fashionable closet is complete without at least one piece of the iconic label, Alexander McQueen. The skull motif of McQueen symbolizes the rebellious style and unconventional runway shows for which the late designer was known. Alexander McQueen Creative Director Sarah Burton continues his legacy with a stunning skull wool and cashmere cape. Wrap it over a luxurious gray Isabel Marant sweater dress that is perfect for cooler days.

It is boot season again and this year the selection of boots have original details and great aesthetic appeal. The Paola d’Arcano Silk Velvet Midi Boots are an amazing combination of two hot trends: velvet and embroidery detail. These boots not only have a gorgeous velvet upper. They also have the coolest heels ever. The on-trend chunky heels are wrapped in embroidered fabric that make a major statement. And speaking of statements, locally based Joanna Morgan Designs Ishtar Shield Necklace in Brass is the one stand-out piece this look needs.

Ring detail embellishments are a huge trend in handbags this season. Chloe makes truly chic bags that definitely stand the test of time and they are showing this trend as well. There is much to covet from this brand, but the Chloe Small Faye Leather Shoulder Bag in gorgeous suede is polished perfection.

The Cocktail: Vampire Punch

Wearing this entire look would keep me in high spirits all day long, but for an extra boost of fun, serve up some Vampire Punch at your creepy gathering.

September and October Fashion Weeks in cities around the world are almost all done. There is plenty of buzz right now about spring collections, but don’t let that distract you from the fun of dressing for fall festivities. Whether your activities are swanky affairs or cozy at-home parties, try something new this month and then reinvent the pieces in the cooler months ahead. Cheers to a colorful autumn!
