This Friday, September 30, Seattle Asian Art Museum will host the premiere of 13 Chambers. Back in the fall of 2015, Aktionsart and Smarthouse Creative invited 13 female artists to create “a new breed of site-specific anthology film.”
“From a wide spectrum of disciplines,” these artists came together “to explore the uncanny, supernatural and sublime in a 1918 dilapidated print shop in Seattle’s South Lake Union neighborhood.”
The films I had the opportunity to sample were brief, surreal and generally horrifying. They are visual poems starring doomed women in a compromised place. You could watch them with your eyes closed and still be scared. I imagine the effect of all 13 films put together will be… unsettling.
The 13 filmmakers are: Jessica Aceti, Megumi Shauna Arai, Lindy Boustedt, Claire Buss, Giselle Bustillos, Nancy Chang, Dayna Hanson, Kat Larson, Amanda Manitach, Wynter Rhys, Serrah Russell, Norma Jean Straw and Ellen Xu.
The program is free. You can register here.
