“There is a ferocious rhinoceros on the loose in a small village, and no one seems alarmed. In fact, by the time Eugène Ionesco‘s cast of citizens can agree on what they saw, it becomes possible for individuals to join the herd. Imagine a business leader, a prominent family, and a politician stampeding as wild rhinoceroses, while a town idly debates whether it is even possible…”
This is the absurd and wonderful premise behind Ionesco’s 1959 play, Rhinoceros. Strawberry Theatre Workshop chose the play specifically because of how it relates to the 2016 U.S. Presidential election. In their own words, “The company imagines a fall evening more politically relevant than the Trump/Clinton debates which will be happening almost simultaneously.”
Directed by Jess K Smith, the play stars Carol Louise Thompson as Bérenger in a role ordinarily reserved for a man. Other cast members include Shawn Belyea, Amy Mayes and Conner Neddersen.
Rhinoceros promises to be a unique, timely and memorable theatre-going experience.
