Pianist and singer Ruby Bishop is officially retiring this Sunday. Her musical career has spanned most of her 96 years on this planet, so the retirement is well-deserved. Still, it’s a bittersweet occasion for her long-time fans.

Seeing Ruby at Martin’s Off Madison was an early delight for me after moving to Seattle in 2006. The piano bar was a requisite stop for all of my out-of-town guests. (Most of them didn’t leave without a CD.) In 2010, Martin’s was re-branded and Ruby moved down the street to the newly renovated and reopened Vito’s, where she has been the queen bee for the last six years.

I find it hard to believe that I’ll never again hear Ruby Bishop play the piano and sing live after this Sunday. It is at least certain that she won’t be taking the stage regularly, and it is time to give her a diva-worthy party.

Vito’s invites Ruby’s many fans to come celebrate her life and career with a host of guest performers. Come have a drink, hear some wonderful music and shower love on a Seattle legend.
