“Capitol Hill Block Party has lost its soul to capitalism,” say the organizers of this year’s SQUADfest… hence the need for an alternative festival, a showcase of local talent, this Saturday, July 23, from 4pm to 1:30am at Vermillion Art Gallery & Bar in Capitol Hill. “We’ll be rocking sets in the street, in the buildin, and til close! All ages until we bring it inside!”
Acts at this year’s SQUADfest include: HR/Honor Roll, TUF, 69/50, Sleep Steady, Golden Alchemy, Black Magic Noize, Spread Thick Dance Party, Rob Sims, Lifetime Supply Club, Fish Tank Friends and Filthy Fingers United. You can expect the sounds at SQUADfest to skew more hip hop than rock, with chill and heady beats to soothe a body and mind in search of party. (SQUADfest’s Facebook page suggestion to “pssst… bring blunts” may be an important clue as to just how chill we’re talking about here.)
I’m most excited to see 69/50 with Raven Matthews and especially DoNormaal, a Seattle transplant from Southern California (She’ll be playing at the Block Party, too.) Check out her recent live session with KEXP here to see what I mean.
