Those who love fashion and design history are eagerly awaiting Yves Saint Laurent: The Perfection of Style, opening at The Seattle Art Museum on October 11 and running to January 8, 2017. This exhibit of Yves Saint Laurent will have designs from the collection of the Fondation Pierre Bergé—Yves Saint Laurent that span throughout the designer’s 44 year career. In anticipation of this show, SAM is sponsoring a fashion design competition using three of YSL’s iconic designs as muses to create a new piece in tribute to the past and in celebration of the future.
Design students and recent graduates can enter the competition by using one of three iconic YSL looks as inspiration for their own design. The three pieces that are offered as inspiration are The 1965 Mondrian Dress, which pays homage to Dutch painter Piet Mondrian, The 1968 Safari Dress from the Rive Gauche Collection, and The 1983 Evening Dress from the Haute Couture Collection called “Paris”.
The competition opened on June 1, with submissions due by July 15, 2016. After the initial sketches are submitted, the finalists will be selected to produce their looks to compete for the final three spots. The winners will be announced on October 1, 2016, with designs from the top three designers displayed in the Seattle Art Museum’s Brotman Forum for the duration of the exhibition. All three top design winners will receive a SAM membership and be invited to the Yves Saint Laurent Opening Celebration on October 8.
The first prize winner will receive gift certificates to local fabric stores, consultation with SAM’s marketing team for career guidance, and a photoshoot showcasing their design with a Seattle fashion photographer and a model. You can download the entry form here, or go to SAM’s contest guide for more information.
