In River of Fundament, artist and filmmaker Matthew Barney brings Norman Mailer’s novel, Ancient Evenings to the screen in an epic opera, told in three acts. The film stars Paul Giamatti, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Ellen Burstyn, Elaine Stritch and many other all-star actors. SIFF Cinema Uptown presents the film on 4k projection with 7.1 surround sound.

River of Fundament promises to be a non traditional opera of dazzling proportions, combining elements of documentary footage, outdoor performances and an impressive interior of Mailer’s famous Brownstone apartment. Hollywood Reporter says that River of Fundament “Splashes across the screen with a tidal wave of thematic concepts: life, death, philosophy, religion, history, mythology, politics, America, industry, urban development, societal construct, and, most abrasively, bodily functions…for six hours of jaw-dropping cinematic art.” In short: All the best things.
