Imagination and the scientific method join together on Thursday, January 14, as Pivot Art + Culture presents Dr. Michael Bess and science fiction writer Ted Chiang in conversation. Pivot, Paul Allen’s new arts center in South Lake Union, is currently showing The Figure in Process, whose twenty contemporary works from the last 50 years explore evolving representations of the human form.

Both Bess and Chiang have explored the human body in their writing; as our society becomes more entrenched with biotechnology and fact approaches fiction, the lines are blurring between Bess’s speculative non-fiction book Our Grandchildren Redesigned and Chiang’s futuristic (but firmly fictional) stories.

As the event posting states, “both authors are recognized for published works that consider the human body as a subject of ongoing biomechanical and social experimentation.” This interdisciplinary debate is sure to spark ethical and creative conversations for the author, biologist and humanist in all of us.
