The second evening of autumn comes with a bevy of art parties around town. If you have suffered through traffic thanks to the visit of Xi Yinping, you can rest easy knowing the visit is over and this evening is the right time to celebrate the beginning of fall and Seattle’s creative culture. We’ve already told you about a few in our VS Daily posts, but there are just so many to choose from, so here’s your reminder to check out one or more events tonight around town.

Decibel Festival: Discwoman at Re-Bar and After Hours Party 1 at Q

It’s day two of Decibel 2015, which lasts through this Sunday. We’re excited about so much of the art and music coming together around the city from around the world. Tonight, we’re recommending Discwoman at Re-Bar, (1114 Howe St) featuring JLin, Natasha Kmeto, Young Ejecta, Raica and Experimental Housewife.

Want to keep dancing through the night? dB After Hours 1 starts late and goes for hours at Q Nightclub (1426 Broadway). Doors open at 2:15 AM (technically on Friday, of course) with Joseph Capriati, Paul Ritch and Sone performing.

Studio Party benefiting Artist Trust at Anna Skibska Studio

Renowned sculptor and artist Anna Skibska will host an End of Summer Soiree at the Anna Skibska Studio in Fremont. The event will benefit Artist Trust in attempting to fund a GAP grant. Guests begin arriving at 6 PM and remarks will begin at 7 PM, including words from scholar and the Emeritus Director of Bellevue Arts Museum, Michael Monroe. Refreshments will be available at the event, sponsored by Hilliard’s Brewery and Dry Fly Distillery. Sliding scale admission at the door. Fall Kick-Off 2015 at Velocity Dance Center

Join Velocity Dance Center (1621 12th Ave)tonight through Saturday, September 26, in kicking off their new season. These three nights of gatherings and performances will culminate in their BIG BANG! performance party on September 27. In her VS Daily post, Claire Biringer states, “The three evenings of the Fall Kick-off event are packed with works by Seattle’s most influential and talented artists, including Velocity co-founder KT NiehoffCherdonna ShinatraKate WallichPeggy Piacenza and so many more. Local Sightings at Northwest Film Forum

Join Northwest Film Forum (1515 12th Ave) for Local Sightings 2015, a celebration and exploration of the best local filmmaking. The 10-day festival, begins tonight, Thursday, September 24, and will continue until October 3. The opening night event, Sprawl to Action, starts at 8 PM, and will be followed by Northwest Film Forum’s 20th Anniversary Party. This costume party is always a good time. This year’s (optional) dress code guide? Dress up as any character from a film NWFF has shown in the past twenty years. Tickets for the opening night event are $12 for the general public, and $8 for members.

Margin Shift Presents at Common AREA Maintenance

At 7 PM, Margin Shift hosts its latest poetry reading at CAM (2125 2nd Ave). This month’s poets are Sarah Mangold (Seattle), KMA Sullivan (Portland) and Joanna Fuhrman (NYC). Join Margin Shift in celebrating these poets, as well as the coming of fall!

Sarah Mangold is the author of Electrical Theories of Femininity (Black Radish Books 2015) and Household Mechanics (New Issues 2002), selected by C.D. Wright for the New Issues Poetry Prize. She is the recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts 2013 Poetry Fellowship as well as residencies from the Djerassi Resident Artists Program, the MacDowell Colony, the Virginia Center for Creative Arts, and a grant from the Seattle Arts Commission.

KMA Sullivan is the author of Necessary Fire, winner of the St Lawrence Book Award (Black Lawrence Press 2014). Her poems have recently appeared or are forthcoming in Boston Review, Southern Humanities Review, Forklift, Ohio, The Nervous Breakdown, Gargoyle, diode, and Anti-, among others. Recent essays have appeared in The Rumpus, The Good Men Project, and Nailed. She has been awarded residencies in creative nonfiction and poetry at Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, Vermont Studio Center, and Summer Literary Seminars and she is the editor-in-chief of Vinyl Poetry and the publisher at YesYes Books.

Joanna Fuhrman is the author of five collections of poetry, including Ugh Ugh Ocean (Hanging Loose Press 2003), Pageant (Alice James Books 2009), and The Year of Yellow Butterflies (Hanging Loose Press 2015). She teaches poetry at Rutgers University, in public schools and in private workshops. She has worked at the Poetry Project at Saint Mark’s Church as a workshop leader and reading series coordinator. She lives in Brooklyn.

Claire Reiner is a writer, artist and recent graduate from the University of Washington’s School of Art with a major in Art History. She is interested in recent art movements and subcultures (1950s, 60s, 70s) and how they have shaped present perceptions and practices of art. She grew up in Southern California and moved to Seattle in 2010. She is quite influenced by the unique geography of both places and enjoys hiking and exploring the Pacific Northwest. Reiner covers visual art exhibits in Seattle and seeks to contribute to a profound and positive artistic community, as well as encourage people to come out and experience art moments for themselves. Reiner is also the Executive Assistant for VanguardSeattle and handles any press related needs.
