Summer is in full swing, and so is summer sale season. The 90 degree heat may kill the mood for sweater shopping, but if you want to snag a few items for your fall/winter wardrobe—and save some cash—it is time to get over it and get going.

The Nordstrom Anniversary Pre-Sale is a favorite among fashion lovers because it offers discounts on merchandise to be carried at regular prices in the fall. The Nordstrom Anniversary Sale has long been considered the store’s best sale of the year, and the Pre-Sale event is for Nordstrom cardholder members only, designed to treat loyal customers to exclusive shopping eight days before the actual sale starts.

It used to be that one could go to the Pre-Sale and see samples of what would be in the actual Anniversary Sale, order and pay for them, then pick them up the day the sale kicked off. Now you can actually go and try on the things you have your eye on for fall, and carry them home with you the same day, to be stashed in the closet for when those first leaves start to fall.

The morning of day one of Pre-Sale, I went down to check out the goods, and a pair of shoes that I had been interested in had already sold out—before 10 AM on the first day no less. The salesman told us that the buyers only had ordered a certain amount of these sale shoes, and had wanted to “blow them out of the store,” with no chance of any reorders. Hmmm. Pity the shoppers who showed up to this pre event after 10 AM, let alone those without a Nordstrom card that are still admiring them in the catalog.

Despite this odd setup, I still love to attend, and my salesperson, Ann Wood, is fantastic. This year I even managed to shop it all while in a surgery boot and on a scooter. Where there is a will, there is a way—although I still didn’t score the shoes. Yet.

If you aren’t in the mood for fall clothes quite yet, you are still in luck. All of your favorite shops and websites are having incredible sales on summer pieces with plenty of time left to wear them, as well as transitional pieces for fall too. Intermix Bellevue is one of my favorite places to shop because their store is exceptional and their staff is amazing, but if you aren’t in the Bellevue area you can check out the sale deals online as well. A bonus feature of the Intermix sale: they even have an additional 50 percent off section within the sale area. Sweet!

Local hot spots Baby and Company and Totokaelo have their enviable summer pieces on sale as well, which gives you an opportunity to close the deal on unique pieces from local and international designers. Shopping online is a landslide of great deals on things that will work into fall—look for suede pieces including shoes, shirts for layering, and dresses that will work with tights and boots in the cooler months.

While it is fun to splurge occasionally on something that you have been admiring and just know will become a long time love, getting that love on sale makes it just that much sweeter. Happy shopping!
