Nightcrawler, written and directed by Dan Gilroy, is not a movie about Nightcrawler from Marvel’s X-men—I know that is what I thought, too, when I saw the title. Nightcrawler is about investigative crime journalist, Louis Bloom (Jake Gyllenhaal) whose ambulance-chaser style of reporting removes him from normalcy and places him in a media underworld. Set in Los Angeles, Nightcrawler has filmic parallels with Drive and Only Lovers Left Alive, with an eerie and vacant cityscape, desaturated colors, and emotionally empty figures signifying trends in recent filmmaking.
Playing at AMC Pacific Place ( 600 Pine St #400, Seattle, WA).
