What could be better than sweater weather? That’s easy-coat season. Don’t get me wrong; I love a sunny day as much as the next person, but cooler temperatures and falling leaves always get my psyched to wrap myself in a cozy chic coat. I have had this gorgeous Trina Turk Scarlett wool and mohair coat tucked away since July, just waiting to make me the happiest girl in the 206.

While I could have written an encyclopedia about my favorite outerwear for this season, I narrowed it down to five favorites, not counting the aforementioned Trina Turk number. Each of these has a little something different and reminds us that what you cover up with is as important as what you have on underneath.

This beautiful lightweight wool topper by Schai is perfect in all of its details. The funnel neck, lovely draping and subtle plaid make this beautiful coat a stand out. Wear a soft gray sweater dress like this Brochu Walker Sweater Dress that has the illusion of a blouse underneath. I love these cool Maison Martin Margiela Snake-Stamped Peep Toe Ankle Booties that mirror the blues and grays of the other pieces. Rebecca Minkoff’s Medium MAB Tote in Ink is a stylish way to keeps things together, and fingerless cashmere gloves like this pair from Henri Bendel can easily be tucked in the pocket for when you need them. I have long been a fan of Seattle-based jewelry designer Juliet Roger, and especially of her chic earrings. I own more pieces than I care to—ahem—admit, especially of the drop-dead gorgeous Quartz Cushion Cut Earrings. I might need this Denim colored pair too….

If you have had a chance to shop the Japanese megastore Uniqlo in person, you know that it is packed with wallet friendly wardrobe staples that have an understated cool appeal. This Short Down Parka has a short feminine silhouette that is almost like the trendy cape of the moment, and it is particularly swanky in blue. It is proof that puffer coats needn’t be boring—that is for certain. Rock a fun pair of H&M patterned skinny pants paired with a oversized sweater, like this Vince Metallic Textured V-Neck. Because the sleeves on the Uniqlo jacket are cropped, you may want to add a pair of Union Jack Fingerless Gloves by autumn cashmere to double up on warmth in a trendy way. I am in love with these Nike Roshe Run Hi Sneakerboots in street chic black because they are the perfect combo of form and function. Channel your inner model with the DKNY+ Cara Delevingne silk-blend beanie—but hurry because this collaboration is selling out quickly. These Face It Sunnies will keep your peepers protected with their groovy mirrored X’s in the center of each lens.

Never one to shy away from standing out in a crowd, this KENZO coat makes a killer statement. Its indigo body has a removable electric blue shearling fur collar and piping that give it a wow factor. It has a drop-shoulder and boxy shape that make it the perfect topper for the on-trend swing dress. Mary Katrantzou’s Lanote Swing Dress keeps the party going with a jewel motif print that would be a perfect addition to your holiday dressing. Maiyet’s Cutout Buckled Leather Ankle Boots work as a cool alternative to a heel with the dress, and the DVF Heritage Print Leather Envelope Clutch is a sleek accessory that has its own personality. A single stand-out piece of jewelry can complete a look, especially when it is something as cool as the Pamela Love Silver Lapis 3 Gravitation Earrings. Toss on some Prada Cat Eye Shades if you want to wear sunglasses at night.

Shearling is certainly having a moment this fall, so why not jump in with both feet and rock the Fira Sherpa Coat? Keep a cozy but comfortable vibe by wearing J.Crew Collection’s Cashmere Sweatpants paired with ASOS’ Girlfriend Shirt in not just denim, but denim tencel. Shoe designer Rocco P. was selected for Shopbop’s ONE by collection, which is where exceptional pieces from established and emerging designers are showcased, and I love these boots as cool alternative to a Doc Marten. Whistles Limited Check Wool Scarf takes the place of a necklace and lets the stunning Tiffany T Square Bracelet in sterling silver speak for itself.

Last but certainly not least, I chose a great alternative to the beloved leather moto jacket. This Cockpit USA Top Gun Flight Jacket would be awesome worn in the traditional way with denim, but why not mix it up? The dark floral of the Alice & Olivia Pia Pouf Full Skirt paired with a cropped black sweater like this Madewell Chevron one is unexpected yet perfect. Over the knee boots like the Stuart Weitzman “5050” in black leather bridge the skirt and the jacket. Simple giant pearl studs and MAC cosmetics “Rihanna” red lips complete the look.

A coat with personality can keep you warm and make you look hot all at the same time. Look for a jacket that is a little different from what you may have already and keep in mind that the rules are there are no rules. Whether you are investing in a major piece or picking up a fast fashion trend, find something new that says a little something great about you.
