W Hotel continues its Wear Wednesdays Fashion Showcase series this coming Wednesday, October 22, 2014 with a Tom Ordonio Trunk Show. Launched in August of 2013, the fashion showcase combines a party and trunk show, featuring a designer and their collection in the W Hotel’s Living Room and Trace Bar.
Independent Designer 2014 alum (Has it really been a month?) Tom Ordonio is the featured designer for the latest Wear Wednesday and I am more than a little psyched. Ordonio’s designs were among my very favorites at the IDRS Show in September at the Bellevue Collection. It is a great opportunity to meet this talented designer and be able to shop the beautiful pieces from his Fall 2014 collection.
The collection, titled Dark Romance, were inspired by two movies: Only Lover’s Left Alive starring Tilda Swinton, and The Hunger, with Catherine Deneuve. Ordonio describes both films as showcasing a lifetime of experiences and having a dark nuance, yet ultimately there is a look to the future. Ordonio says, “Stylistically, I love the nod to the 1940s in Catherine Deneuve’s wardrobe and the 1960s feel of the Tilda Swinton film. Although, both movies sort of have a dark undertone to them, both of them are about living life for today.”
Ordonio gives his modern take on this with his signature edginess, shown in the textiles of faux fur, faux snakeskin, and neoprene. The darkness comes through in the color palette of black, brown and burgundy with puff sleeve blouses and jackets, giving a subtle reference to the past. The modern cool factor grabbed me from the first time I saw Tom Ordonio’s pieces, and I am looking forward to seeing more from him in the coming year.
Wear Wednesdays are a great way to introduce yourself to some of the amazing designers from our area and score a coveted piece or two. Taking fashion from the runway of IDRS to the reality of one’s own closet is an amazing opportunity for all lovers of fashion and originality.
