When Cara Delevingne marched down the Burberry runway wearing her personalized color block blanket poncho, you could almost instantly tell that this was going to be “a thing”—the kind that makes the fashion set from around the world do an instant scramble to get one of these personalized beauties for themselves. Luckily for those who love this reversible equestrian inspired piece, this fall the British label will be offering a special customization service available to everyone. For an additional charge of a little over $300—on top of the $1,395 price tag—you too can have this Burberry poncho personalized.
If you aren’t quite in the market for such a statement (and pricey) piece, there are many others to choose from. For this month’s column, I found three other distinct ponchos in various price points and styled each of them with their own unique look. The poncho, or cape, can be chic, boho, or something in between and is a quintessential fall look.
The Thakoon Addition Zip Front Poncho is definitely uptown girl. Its herringbone pattern, fringed high-low hem and exposed zipper front make it a gorgeous combination with a DVF leather skirt. An Equipment blouse with an on-trend plaid body and striped sleeves is dressy but fun with the leather skirt. I adore these edgy rag & bone Noelle open toe booties because they are so comfortable you can run around all day in them. And I have. Fur is big again for fall, both real and faux, and adding it to your look with accessories gives an instant fall update. This amazing Deadly Ponies Mr. Nebula fur messenger bag combines dyed purple fur and super soft black leather that gives your look a punch up of wow factor. Add the Jamie Joseph Inverted Rectangular Ametrine Ring for a simple but beautiful accessory.
Theory’s Florencia Poncho streamlines the garment. It may not have all the bells and whistles of some other pieces, but it is chic in an understated way. Short boots and distressed denim are two looks that I love for fall and plan to wear a lot. These R13 Destroyed Skinny Jeans are the perfect shade of grey and a match made in heaven when paired with Pierre Hardy Double-Buckle Motorcycle Boots. This See by Chloe for Madewell dark floral blouse adds a little French girl feel to this look. I love fingerless gloves, so when I found these RagCuffs on my new favorite shopping app, Spring, I was in love. They are knitted cuffs that come in long and short and a variety of styles—a little something different to accessorize your look and keep your wrists nice and cozy. Pop a Vita Fede Bracelet or two on top for some sparkle.
This ASOS Reversible Cape reminds me of the Burberry one, in a softer and more affordable way. Wearing Elizabeth and James leather moto shorts and a pair of grey suede tall wedge boots, like this Giuseppe Zanotti pair, have low-key boho appeal. This AllSaints Verney Tank has a soft neckline that can be buttoned for different looks and would be beautiful underneath the poncho. A soft felt floppy fedora with feather trim and a pair of bright Giorgio Armani sunglasses keeps the carefree vibe going. Snake motifs are always in fashion in my book, and this Jonathan Adler Vera Snake Convertible Clutch gives a little wink of attitude.
And how would I wear the gorgeous aforementioned Burberry blanket poncho? While any of the looks above would work, I would go for my favorite pair of leather pants, short motorcycle boots like these Burberry ones, and a cozy cashmere sweater. Don’t forget to add the monogram, for a lovely personal effect. That’s LJC, if you please.
