Tickets are now on sale for On the Boards’ presentation of the German/British art collective Gob Squad—one night only, Saturday, September 6—which is bound to be one of the most unique experiences of the summer, kicking off OtB’s exciting new season. Lovers of city life, theatre, film, visual and arts and general mischief should take note. The Guardian calls the Gob Squad’s work “…one of the most impossible, beautiful, courageous and epic theatrical experiences you can imagine.”
From the OtB press release:
For one night only, the streets of Lower Queen Anne will become a film set for four artists on a mission: to make everyday life as passionate and thrilling as a Hollywood blockbuster. The film begins exactly one hour before its premiere, when the four performer/activists meet, synchronize their watches, arm themselves with their video cameras, and simultaneously begin filming. Continuously filming, they head off in four directions on a frantic search for heroes, villians, tragic stories, the ideal location, the perfect kiss…
Every passerby becomes a potential extra with the power to change the script. Familiar locations lose their banality and regular people become stars as an ordinary evening becomes a magical event. After exactly one hour of filming, the artists triumphantly rush back to the theater, where their footage will be synced live before the awaiting audience (who themselves become a part of the film’s final scene).
OtB invites the audience to gather at OtB around 7:30pm for a pre-show tailgate party/season kickoff celebration complete with a beer garden, sparklers, food from HallavaFalafel, and treats from BikePops. OtB Artistic Director Lane Czaplinski will act as pep rally captain, galvanizing the waiting audience as they cheer on the arriving artists, their neighbors, and their city. To quote Gob Squad: “Each of us is just one in a million, easy to replace and easy to forget in a city that doesn’t really need us. But don’t worry. We’re going to change all that. We’ve got a plan. This city will need us and this film will be our witness.”
The performance troupe has performed on every continent besides Antarctica and uses an array of media to transform the banal into the sublime and bring audiences out of passive spectating and into the creative process and performance.
