Seattle music and film lovers should be sitting on the edge of their seats for the opening of SIFF 2014. Seattle International Film Festival turns 40 next week and the opening gala will feature Jimi: All Is By My Side, starring Outkast’s Andre Benjamin as Jimi Hendrix and directed by John Ridley, who is most known for his screenwriting (notably Twelve Years A Slave, and less notably Undercover Brother). Hendrix sadly joined the 27 Club in 1970 and his hometown still bears many homages to him, including the EMP around the block from McCaw Hall where SIFF’s opening gala will be held. Like the EMP’s appearance (which is supposed to resemble Hendrix’s smashed guitar), the new biopic has received mixed reviews after screening elsewhere, but it demands to be seen by music fans. At the very least, the occasion of its release may be a good reason to get a picture taken with the Jimi Hendrix statue on Broadway and Pine and not feel too much like a tourist.
SIFF’s Opening Night Gala is 7PM, May 15 at Marion Oliver McCaw Hall. Be sure to get tickets to this exciting event.
