The denim shirt is a wardrobe staple that comes and goes in its significance, and right now as a trend it is back with a vengeance. No matter if you are grunge, boho, preppy or none of the above, interpretation of the denim shirt in your 2014 wardrobe can be more stylish than one would expect. And who doesn’t love a denim shirt? You know you do.

Since I haven’t seen this shirt make an appearance in quite a few seasons, it was important to pick an updated look. Current/Elliott’s fresh approach to this tried-and-true piece is spot on. Its ombre coloring, snap buttons and shaped styling make it the perfect Vogue a Trois.

Ladylike becomes informal edgy with a mix of pieces that work together for some low-key glamour. Current/Elliiot’s shirt plays down the femininity of the Miu Miu floral print silk-faille skirt and the pointed toe slingback Prada flats. I love the unexpected combination of the dark floral with Clare Vivier’s leopard fold-over clutch. Rocking the proper sunglasses has become another important part of accessorizing and these leopard sunnies work this outfit well. Keep your jewelry simple with this Alex and Ani thin gold trio of bangles and add a topknot for a bit of sophistication.

Nothing beats the timeless beauty of a camel wool coat. This Marc Jacobs Rex Sweater Coat will always ensure you are polished with its below the knee length and easy pairing with so many pants and jeans—the J Brand brown leather super skinny pants, a dress, or even your favorite pair of jeans. The denim shirt keeps it informal, but adding pieces like the snake print Maison Martin Margiela Cutout Heels and a Kenneth Jay Lane tiger eye ring lend a swanky edge. I am head over heels for the Prada Saffiano Hula-Print Bowler Bag. The cheeky Hawaiian print takes this bowler over the top. Obsessing a bit…

I love tulle skirts so much. For a while, I wore my black one a ridiculous amount of time, and I didn’t care, even when everyone else was wearing denim to everything. This Topshop Grey Tulle Skirt is a little swoosh of fabulousness to play off the shirt, especially when it is tucked underneath the Vince Piped Sweatshirt. The contrast of feminine and masculine works perfectly. And how can you not love this Shawlux NYC Times Square Taxi Cashmere Silk Scarf? Snowy days on my visit to NYC last week sent me into Soho’s Dusica Dusica, where I bought a great pair of grey Bakar CR lug sole boots in gorgeous and durable grey Italian leather. And these HappySocks were everywhere in the stores there, so it seemed fitting to include them in this happy little ensemble. Elizabeth and James’ python embossed leather backpack is a little bit of much-needed sunshine.

Revisiting tried-and-true pieces from past closets doesn’t mean you need to wear them in conventional ways. Think creatively when you look for a denim shirt this season and look for a modern cut that is both flattering and versatile—the rebirth of another classic.
