Higher education just got more fun with the reappearance of the varsity jacket and its surprisingly versatile looks. Reinvented with sophisticated fabric combinations and a trimmer silhouette, the varsity jacket is sporty cool, like a pair of classic Converse. This jacket style has the ability to take any outfit and give it a street appeal, whether it is contrasting with a more feminine look or adding a surprising contemporary edge to a classic outfit.

Although the varsity jacket can come with monogramming and lettering, a variety of colors, and cropped or mixed media sleeves, such as leather, I am going to go for the classic look. This rag & bone Raquel Varsity Jacket has a blue and cream wool body that makes it easy to transform it from athletic wear to trendsetting style, and is my Vogue A Trois for this week.

Varsity Team Set #1

This jacket is such a great piece with leather leggings. I like the blue Escada Stretch Leather Leggings because the color is a chic change from plain black, and is a great contrast to the girly appeal of this H&M Chiffon blouse. The blouse’s burgundy floral pattern and sheer fabric is perfect with a contrasting blue camisole underneath, or if you are young and daring, just a gorgeous dark blue bra. Wear a neutral pair of short booties like these Woman by Common Projects Zipper Boots in warm grey. The Alexa Leather Satchel by Mulberry is another classic piece that can take you from season to season, and the slouchy Tarnish Knit Beanie will keep you cozy. My favorite part of this look is the stunning Neon Zinn Double Chain Necklace by Seth Damm. This wearable art is made from one continuous strand of hand dyed 100% cotton rope with satin ribbon cuffs. Each of these unique pieces are made to be worn or displayed and the aesthetic is absolutely stunning.

Varsity Team Set #2

The pencil skirt adds a bit of sophistication to our sporty jacket. This Burberry Brit coated cotton skirt has the coolest zipper details, and adding the Barneys New York Pinto Ponyhair Pumps is an unexpected bit of pattern. If you don’t already own an Equipment blouse, think about adding one to your wardrobe. There are so many styles and choices, and I am loving the preppy feel of this particular Equipment blouse—all buttoned up and decorated with the Nocturne Sandi Embellished Collar. Channel the cool of Nicole Richie with her House of Harlow 1960 Carmen Sunglasses. Grab this fabulously chic Celine and you can hit the streets in style.

Varsity Team Set #3

Urban style is often a statement of the wearer based on the feeling of a moment, pairing of favorite pieces, and an utter disregard for the rules. The individuality of this next look is about wearing what you love, and I happen to love these red Aquazzura Amelie Chain Trim Flats. They are fabulous all by themselves, yet they still work as a “neutral” with the Zara Floral Print Trousers and the feminine polka dot Madewell blouse—because, like I said, no rules. If you want an extra pop of red in an accessory, you can try this Cos Grosgrain Ribbon Necklace. The Vita Fede Monaco Double Wrap Leather Bracelet is a great little addition of understated bling. And this time, wear your rag & bone varsity jacket over your shoulders like a cape for a free-spirited look.

This varsity jacket would be so great over a dress, with tall boots, or a pair of dressy shorts. Once you stop seeing this piece in its original role, it can be incorporated into your wardrobe in many ways and worn any way you choose. Start your new year with a great new piece that has endless possibilities and you will be the one who is a total winner. Go team!
