This fall season’s fabulous selection of gorgeous coats, jackets and ponchos has made it one of the best for outerwear in recent memory. Leather trims, swing coats, mixed media, color blending with your bag, and luxe details make the choices truly exciting.

The perfect coat for me is one where fashion meets function. Taking a traditional style and making it more modern by revamping the silhouette is what draws me to a particular piece. Rather than having fashion get washed away with the challenges of winter weather, finding a coat that that makes you proud to wear it should be considered a true find and a worthy investment. This week I have chosen the Alice + Olivia Hooded Puffer Jacket because of its stylish high/low edge, exaggerated detail sleeves and cool quilted fabric. Think a puffer can’t be sexy? Think again.

A favorite summer dress can translate into fall and winter by changing a few pieces around. The floaty Ulla Johnson Geranium Floral Dress mirrors the high/low hemline of the jacket and its cool factor gets upped a notch with the addition of Topshop’s Monochrome City Scape Tights. I love these Alexander Wang suede ankle boots’ super chunk heel, a detail that holds a modern edge. The Golden Lane Small Croc Print Duo Clutch adds a glossy notion to this downtown girl look.

Layering is a great way to make your fall pieces look chic. Start with the Equipment Ombre Python Print Chiffon Blouse (an Intermix exclusive piece) underneath a Madewell Journal Cardigan in Beetle Green. Top it off with the Theory Leather Sleeve Open Blazer, with its crepe body and leather sleeves. The RED Valentino 5 Pocket Straight Leg Jeans were a purchase I made last year on a whim from a sale rack and ended up being my go-to denim. The fit hugs the body and the denim holds the perfect amount of stretch. I should have bought two pairs.

The box pleat of AllSaints Fiore Leather Skirt make a fierce match with Manolo Blahnik’s BB Camo Specchio-Heel Pump. The bronze detail on the heel of this little bit of footwear fun can be picked up with a hip accessory. The meshing of the bronze metal and the current “bug” trend in jewelry is paired in the IAM by Ileana Makri Bronze Beetle Cuff. Keep your top simple but not boring with this French Connection Shimmer T-Shirt and you are good to go. If it’s especially chilly, the Matthew Williamson Rabbit Scarf has a beautiful cozy pattern to it.

Luckily, designers have taken a winter staple and made puffers that are a far cry from the boxy bedding look of the past. A jacket that works for the change in weather and doesn’t sacrifice style is a worthy find in itself. When you are on the hunt for your perfect coat look for one that you cannot wait to wear, whether you are headed to the park or a dinner party. It’s the perfect way to chill out.
