Menswear seems to find a place in the fall previews each year. Whether it is trouser-style pants, oxfords or shrunken blazers, taking a little something from the boys and giving it a feminine spin is a standard for the cooler months. Because it can be retro, punk or traditional, plaid is a fabulous way to spice things up.
This week I chose the Smythe Patent Leather Elbow Patch Tartan Blazer to style three ways. I love this blazer because it is the whole package: gorgeous tartan plaid, a modern silhouette with its nipped waist and cropped length, and a bit on the punk side with the patent leather elbow patches. Unlike some patterned pieces, plaid is chameleon-like in its endless versatility.
Since I am a fan of mixing patterns, I chose the On The Dot Blouse for a great little compliment to our bold tartan. Wear this with the AG Jeans Absolute Legging in Raven and add a pair of riding boots to give your look an equestrian feel. I love the gorgeous Daelin Riding Boot by Cole Haan because of the beautiful sequoia colored detail on the top.
I adore the pleats of the Miss Wu leather skirt. It is a chic update to a traditional style. Together with the simplicity of a T by Alexander Wang Classic T-Shirt in Black, the blazer can stand on its own with a dark backdrop. I happen to think that Wolford makes the best tights around, and their Matte Opaque Tights rock. If you haven’t tried this brand, then you must; they are gorgeous, durable and worthy of their price tag. Pull on a pair of Dr. Marten 1460 Pewter Koram Flash Boots for a little Gwen Stefani vibe. They are not only classic cool, but also incredibly comfortable.
I am in love with the shop Totokaelo. Their fairly new digs on Capital Hill are amazing—like walking into a shop in Soho…or Paris. Now carrying both men’s and women’s clothing, Totokaelo has beautifully curated items that you won’t find just anywhere. The shoes in particular send me over the edge, and I think the Dieppa Restrepo Gaston in Black Crocodile would be perfect with a pair of BF Boyfriend Jean by Rich and Skinny. Put on the Rag & Bone Spine Long Sleeve Tee to dress down our fab plaid just a bit and you have a perfect weekend look.
Even if you don’t have a checkered past, adding some plaid is a great way to jazz the neutrals in your wardrobe. Whether you go all out with something like this jacket or just add a plaid scarf or other accessory, plaid can help create great dimension to your look.
