Naeem Khan Floral-Print Shift Dress

Naeem Khan Floral-Print Shift Dress

Modern florals were everywhere, up and down the runways for spring and summer this year, and they are a far cry from the delicate, tiny flowers of traditional prints. These contemporary pieces  are surprisingly edgy, with bold flower patterns and darker backgrounds. The floral trend is not limited to garments, but can be found in shoes, handbags and accessories. Even if you don’t consider yourself to have a particularly “girly” style, I think you can embrace this trend for what it is—modern and unconventional femininity.

Keeping in that vein—or perhaps “in that vine”—this week I have chosen Naeem Khan’s Floral Print Shift Dress to style three ways. It is such a gorgeous piece that it can stand on its own, with great details and a silhouette that is flattering as well as avant garde.

That being said, I think that both the shift style of the dress and its length make it the perfect tunic top as well. If you don’t have them already, invest in a pair of leather or faux leather leggings. They add a year-round chicness to any outfit and are the perfect way to turn this gorgeous dress into a gorgeous top. This Blank Pussy Cat Faux-Leather pair is a great alternative to actual leather, with the same fit and great details, such as slash leather pockets in the back. And I am all about the chunky heel these days. Even if the heel is tall, you can dance, run or just generally look cool in this great style. Check out the Rachel Zoe Brooklyn from Zappos Couture for a fun shoe with a great mixed media appeal. As far as jewelry, I have to say that I became a little obsessed with drusy quartz a couple of years ago and its fantastic aesthetic. If you are not familiar with drusy (also spelled druzy), they are crystals that form on the surface of minerals, and with the tinier crystal drusy there is an almost velvety appearance. The medium-size drusy are like sanding sugar and the colors and sparkle of all the drusy make it very appealing material for jewelry. These Marica Moran Double Leaf Earrings are just what I am talking about. They complete the outfit.

The exquisite modern floral design of the Naeem Kahn dress gives it the ability to be an edgy piece and also one with a grown-up femininity to it that I am playing on with this second look. Everything looks better with a wedge, right?  You can make this dress have a more playful side by adding the Saint Laurent Ankle Strap Sandal in a stunning rouge color. Carry the Burberry Animal Print Clutch and you will have the perfect look for a summer féte.

I am always looking for the unexpected when it comes to style. Sophia Coppola is one of those women who seems to wear what she loves and is comfortable in, and always manages to look original and chic at the same time. I am taking inspiration from her and her signature ballet flat look and pairing our dress with a gorgeous pair of flats. I am having a moment with the pointed toe myself, so I have chosen Christian Louboutin’s Mrs. H Patent Leather Ankle Strap Ballet Flats because I love the sheen of the silk of the dress with the patent. I also love the tortoise flower bracelet from J.Crew, and I would pair it with three more delicate gold bangles and a pair of simple large thin gold hoops.

Mr. Kahn’s dress takes the floral rage and makes it a sophisticated way to have fun with fashion. When you choose a dress, remember you are not limited to just a pair of traditional heels. You can make the dress the foundation for a look that is uniquely yours.
